NATURALISM: Influences in Education

Naturalism is a philosophical approach that asserts that nature is the ultimate reality and that all phenomena can be explained through natural causes and laws. Naturalism is closely related to the scientific method and has had a significant impact on education. According to this philosophy, human life is the part of the scheme of nature. This philosophy gives emphasis to matter, the physical world. It does not believe in spirituality and supernaturalism.

In education, naturalism emphasizes the importance of experiential learning and observation. Naturalists believe that knowledge is gained through sensory experiences and that learning should be based on the student's interests and experiences. Naturalism also emphasizes the importance of science and scientific inquiry, as it is through scientific investigation that we can discover the laws that govern the natural world.

One of the key tenets of naturalism is that knowledge should be acquired through experience and observation of the natural world. This means that naturalists believe that students should learn through hands-on exploration and experimentation, rather than simply memorizing information from textbooks. In education, this approach is often referred to as inquiry-based or experiential learning, and it is designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and their place in it.

In addition to emphasizing the importance of observation and experience, naturalism also stresses the importance of critical thinking and rational inquiry.
